From: Sherrie Saint John To: crossword-games-pro@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 00:20:24 -0400 Subject: [cgp] Albany, after 10 games Warning: There *are* standings at the bottom. I did go on a bit..... John Chew likes to test me throughout the day. He hands me this note: "Ed Neugroschl opened a game with JOLES (40 points) against Gene Rawlins and later extended it to the triple for 54 more!" I, of course, had no idea what this note meant, which caused John to say, "well, now you are supposed to 'think' Sherrie." Okay, so I thought: hmmm... um.... and came up with CAJOLES, but that is one letter too short and not the answer (I was given extra credit for finding it, the only other front extension for JOLES). Can you guess it? Bottom of message. Marlon is sitting down to give me something to say. He starts out with "God d*mned Canadians." :) Good ol' Marlon. He says he is feeling good. He was 2-1 after yesterday and had a good start. He had to play Bernie and says, "I didn't begrudge him good tiles, but he did roll me, which made me very angry." (I originally typed "angry" and Marlon corrected me, "No, VERY angry.") So before his game with Tim Adamson, Marlon was doing his "Superstars Matchup" talk. Marlon says, "I tell him it is a statement game I'm going to make and I ended up scoring 289." I laughed so hard when Marlon told me this that tears ran down my face. In any event, it did start his day off badly.... Then, he says, "I ran the tables in the afternoon after I started getting some tiles. I tried OVERRINSE* against Matt, a bad try. He was going to lose if he let it stand so he challenged and that made it 'bad.'" Marlon says he's not missing nothing and doing what he does to the board. So, take that! He keeps talking about Libby, and I smile politely having NO IDEA who he is talking about. He means Libero. And I thought *I* mispronounced his name! :) Ben Withers, Paul Avrin, and Marlon are pouring over the standings. They are especially fond of John Chew's TSH program geek notes. It lists high game, average points for and against players, estimated new ratings, and ratings change. Enough to keep any numbers geek happy. After division A's Libero Paolella took John's advice and lost a strategic game, he went on to easily win the rest of games against "weaker" opponents, ending the day at 9-1 +850. Also in division 1, Vince Casetellano, lost his first 4 games, but is now on a 6-game winning streak and has climbed to 10th place. In division B, John Robertson dropped to second place after winning his first 8 games, but losing his last 2. He is now one game behind Mary Alice Lyons, who is 9-1 +500. In division C, Scott Kitchen is in 1st place at 8-2 +578. Close behind him is Terry Aitken, who was only 1-2 yesterday, but won all of his games today to end up 8-2 +463. Larry Sherman has the tournament's high game so far with a 589. He defeated Vince Castellano in the first round. Way to start strong Larry! I pull Larry over, against his will, and make him tell me about this game. He hems and haws and then says, "I owe my success in that game to my personal relationship with Satan." When asked for clarification, Larry says, "uh... umm... I have a toothache." Debbie Stegman walks by and adds, "And, he misses Joel." So, I ask Larry if he was going to bed soon. And he said, yes, but that he was going to go out to Wolf Road and look for a hooker first. If he failed, he would then go to bed alone. To which John Chew said, "Oh, you would have to make that rug all by yourself then, huh?" Larry is still trying to get the joke. Debbie Stegman has four wins and she is doing "okay." In a very Stuart Smalley kind of way. :) Scott Kitchen, aforementioned division C first place guy, is hanging out with us now. He just played Ed Liebfried from division B and won. I think this guy is in the wrong division. Clearly. His most exciting game today was against Bob Becker. Scott says, "Each of us had one tile left on our racks. Bob had an unplayable Q and I had a C." Scott was in time trouble, but was able to find CANE with 10 seconds to go on his clock! And, the best part? The Q-stick won it for him! Scott is seeded 4th in division C, so we are expecting great things from him for the rest of the tournament. Ed Liebfreid, another after-hours player, tells me about the "accidental bingo" story. He was playing James Clark and it was late in the afternoon. James played out with COINTER and said 25 and out. Ed said, "nice bingo." James said, "bingo? what bingo?" To which, the sportsman in Ed came out and he corrected James, telling him that he hadn't played a 6, but rather a 7-letter word. Turns out that it was James' game all the way anyway and he didn't actually NEED that bingo to win, which makes the sportsmanship all the better. Debbie now remembers a story. The back story: she plays very fast, too fast and to her determent often. Earlier in this tournament she played VODUN to open a game and just as she hit the clock, saw the EL on her rack and had a big DUH!!! She should have played UNLOVED. So, she then decided that she *is* playing too fast and it is hurting her. So, she has developed this new "clock hovering type feeling the battery power aura" thing. She puts her word down and then lays her hand over the clock, on an air pillow of indecision, driving her opponents nuts. Anyway, since she has done this, she has found FOUR bingos that wouldn't have made it onto the board. The one she can recall most quickly is the opening rack of AIBLLPY. She quickly threw down LIABLY, then did the "hover" thing and saw PLIABLY! So, she threw the P down and then hit the clock. The bonus? Her opponent challenged. I think she might lose some of her friends if she does too much of this. :) Turns out that her fastness has been a topic at the Manhattan SCRABBLE club. Larry and Joel Sherman have forced her, in the past, to sit on her hands and count to 50 after she made each play to force her to think about the play. She admits that if she ever goes down to 6 minutes left on her clock, even with only 4 tiles left on her rack, she'll freak out that she has no time left. Before the results: in after-hours play, Lisa Kessler & Kristen Chew defeated Marlon Hill, 411-320 ish. Kristen says that despite this win (which she credits to ELEGIST and EASTERN--John says ELEGITS would have been strategically better), she was most impressed with Marlon's ability to keep score and track in his head as they played. Kristen was keeping score in their game and more than once Marlon corrected her math from across the table (despite the fact that he wasn't keeping score himself!). John Chew, stepping out from behind his computer, played 7 games of speed SCRABBLE tonight. Let's just say Libero is doing MUCH better in the main event. :) John, deciding NOT to be modest, insists that I point out that he won 6 of the 7 games. Okay, 10 more games and then we're done! cheers, sherrie Ed's extended word was FRIJOLES.
