The Chamber of Commerce of the Town of Shediac is sponsoring its first ever sanctioned Scrabble tournament this year, to celebrate the birthplace of the earliest known crossword board game. The tournament weekend will feature a $10,000 prize pool (see below for details), a one-day newcomers' event, and an exhibition match of the original Shediac Crossword Game. All events to be directed by John Chew.

Prizes: 100% of EF 70% of EF−PF Initial prize pool of $2,000 plus $100 per competitor, prorated between TWL and CSW. TWL: $3,000 / $1,000 / $500 / $400 / $350 / $300 / $200 conditional on 30 players competing. CSW: $2,000 / $1,000 conditional on 10 players competing. Prize fund increased by additional $1,250 with total 60 players competing.
Format: Unrated, 2 rounds, 1 open TWL division, pairings depend on attendance. NASPA-rated, restricted to players rated ≤1000 (subject to change as needed to meet rating requirements), 4 rounds, 1 open TWL division. Chew Pairings, Gibson rule in effect. NASPA-rated, 15 rounds plus 2-round final, 2 open divisions (TWL and CSW lexicon). Minimum attendance in each division: 4 players. Chew Pairings, Gibson rule in effect.
Food: Coffee, tea, snacks Coffee, tea, snacks Coffee, tea, snacks throughout.
Lobster dinner Saturday night included in entry fee.

Clocks will be started promptly to maintain the above schedule, and any player who misses a scheduled game may be removed from subsequent pairings until they return and the next pairings are calculated.

Travel Notes

The nearest airport to Shediac is Moncton (YQM), with connections to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal; it is a 21-minute drive from the tournament site.

We have a small block of rooms held at the Hotel Shediac, for C$119 + tax. There are several other hotels, and many bed-and-breakfasts available in town nearby.
