I think the mall is playing background music, but it's hard to hear over our own sound system, which is blasting out boppy dance music to boost the players' spirits. It's great for ABBA fans.

I've eaten about half of the food court takeaway lunch that Ravee snuck upstairs for me. There was a yummy pork and egg on rice dish (of course with a large amount of chili sauce to pour over it), and then curried fish balls on a stick. I thought at first that the green bits sticking out all over it were green onions; I very quickly realized that they were chili peppers instead, but survived.

There are five players from Japan playing, which is more than I have ever seen playing in a single event. Three of them are Japanese Tadao Takeda (JPN), Mihoko Terasaki (JPN) and Kunihiko Kuroda (JPN); the other two are foreign residents: Warodom Geamsakul (THA) and Jason Katz-Brown (USA). All speak good enough English and Japanese for us to alternate smoothly between them; I hope someday I can learn enough Thai to do the same.

The estimated WESPA ratings posted here are still based on pre-Penang ratings, as the post-Penang master rating list has yet to be published. I will as soon as time permits manually fold in the Penang ratings into the rating list we're using for this event.

Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) continues to lead the field, now 3-0 +637 after a 545-318 victory at Board 1 over Thanapong Kukiettikulchai (THA). The big win widens his lead over Charnrit Khongthanarat (THA) to more than 100 points, but Charnrit stays in second with eight more undefeated players behind them, and then the two players at 2½-½
