Most of us started punctually at 11:00 this morning, and the several latecomers were all known as habitually tardy but fast players. One of them is Maneeda Tanasanvimol (THA), who keeps Kunihiko Kuroda (JPN) waiting for more than ten minutes and almost manages to beat him, instead giving him the second lowest win of the tournament so far, 340-339.

At Board 1, the undefeated Chollapat Itthi-aree (THA) went down 502-430 to Komol Panyasophonlert (THA), who is now alone at 7-0 +535. In second place with nearly twice the spread is Siu Hean Cheah (SGP) 6-1 +1016, who has scored an average of 515 points per game so far. Chollapat is in third place; the other two 6-1 players are Charnrit Khongthanarat (THA) and Manop Phiphatboonserm (THA).

Team Singapore is having a good event so far. In addition to Cheah in second, they have Tony Sim (SGP) in eighth and Weibin Toh (SGP) in 11th. According to winning percentage though, the two-player teams from New Zealand and the U.S. are tied for the lead, each at 64%.

We're breaking for lunch again after one round, partly because it's a good time for lunch, and partly to accommodate the schedule of the prime minister (a well-known Sudoku fan, who is reportedly in the building). I head downstairs to the food court for noodles with Amnuay Ploysangngam (THA). I don't bother to try taking photos in the food court; it's a dense warren of hundreds of stalls and restaurants serving every kind of food imaginable, and to my mind the best reason to hold a tournament in this venue, but there's no way to capture it all in a photo.
