Round 16: The ambiance in the playing hall at 9 am this morning was full of vim and vigour, with high levels of anticipation for a great day of Scrabble - rather a contrast to the grey, overcast and breezy day outside the hotel. I am still waiting to hear on the grapevine about the activities of the players last night but perhaps it turned out to be a very quiet Saturday night in view of the fact the there are so many players in with a chance to win a prize this year! On the top table Mohammad Sulaiman (PAK) and Amy Byrne (Sco) are doing battle. Both their first moves were to change tiles having picked awful racks- Amy changed GGIUU and Mohammad changed AIEO. Mohammad then played a bonus DEbATING for 80. He then followed immediately with OUTFABLE for 76. Amy got her first bonus down - TREASON for 82 to reduce the deficit and a few moves later reduced the deficit once more with LiNIEST for 78. However there were no opportunities during the end game to produce any game-changing plays and Sulaiman won 482-430.
