Round 20. While the last round is played out, which will decide the final winner of the Tournament - it's gone down to the wire - it gives me an opportunity to make a few 'thank yous'. Top of the list has to go to the organisers- Theresa Brousson (MLT), the Malta Scrabble Club Committee and Cecil Muscat (MLT). They have worked really hard to make sure the Tournament was a success and I feel sure all the players would agree that is the case. A big 'thank you' to the Sponsors - The Malta Tourism Authority, Scotts Supermarket and Intercomp/Dell - without them there would be no prize money - that's the bottom line so the organisers are very grateful for their generous support. The next, has got to be John Chew, our software genius, who has run the Tournament quietly and truly efficiently and with an incredible website that has been a joy to surf through, especially the 'live' streaming of the top table throughout the Tournament. Many, many thanks John. Next are the helpers, the annotators, and the runners. They have a pretty thankless task and yet they have done a great job with humour and patience - Many thanks! One must not forget the hotel, The Topaz, and its staff, and especially Johanna the Sales co-ordinator. The hotel has hosted the Tournament for the Malta Scrabble Club for two years now. They have also done a really great job. I would like to thank Liz Said, the wife of Mario Said, the owner of Scotts Supermarkets, who has kindly agreed to come in on a Sunday afternoon and present the Prizes. And finally, I would like to thank all the Players from all over the World who made the effort to come and play in the Malta Scrabble Open Tournament - at the end of the day any Tournament is only as good as the people who come to play in it and you have all been terrific! The sense of fair play and fun has pervaded all our proceedings - thank you all for coming!! So, now to the final game - David Webb (Eng) and Lukeman Owolabi (NGA) - winner takes all. David's first play was a bonus: STANNEL for 61. A couple of moves later, Lukeman played: OUTGONE for 79. Two moves later, Lukeman played another bonus: ENCHArGE for 78 and using the first blank. David immediately countered with ROSEATE for 77. After a close game, Lukeman won 439-396 and of course won the Tournament - Well done! Theresa Brousson (MLT) from Malta came in 3rd. The commentary is now complete - I hope you have found informative and Please come and visit lovely MALTA! -- Geoff Brousson |
