In this round's annotated game, first-place Mikki Nicholson (Eng) plays sixth-place Mohammad Sulaiman (ARE) in a one-sided four-bingo game. At Board 2, second-place Cecil Muscat (MLT) plays twelfth-place Dan Sandu (ROM); and at Board 3, Helen Gipson (Sco) and Theresa Brousson (MLT) re playing. Helen beats Theresa 525-450, in the third-highest scoring game so far, and the players have kindly posted an annotated copy of the game. To quote one player, "I missed a bonus play, and she got away with a phoney." Viv Beckmann (Eng) scored a major upset against Vincent Boyle (Sco) this round, overcoming a 667-point rating deficit (1727-1060) to beat him 428-344. It's lunchtime now, and I'm off to get a plate of food from the hotel's Maltese hot buffet. The food here has been fairly good for buffet food at a resort that caters to a diverse group of guests; I'm looking forward though to the break between events to get out and eat elsewhere. Today's lunch: pork chops, peas, pasta salad, green salad, and a roll. I also look for two delinquent players who failed to turn in their result slips, delaying the start of the following round by five minutes; they eventually turn up just as we're trying to stat. |
