In this round's annotated game, first-place Mikki Nicholson (Eng) plays eighth-place Dan Sandu (ROM). Mikki's opening rack is EEHILLM. Correct play of ELHI is rewarded with the natural bingo MODULES on the next rack, though playing it to the ELHI would have been better. Dan replies with REDACTOR through the O in MODULES, missing the double-double through the U. The players trade 40-point plays and Dan keeps a 24-point lead. Mikki balances the rack BBDIPPT and catches up; Dan loses a turn to the phoney bingo WAVERLY*. Mikki hooks B-HAJI to make BOOBY (48) to pull ahead, then keeps a 40-point lead until Dan bingoes dINGOES. (Note to Dan: it would have been more entertaining had I been able to write "Dan bingoes bINGOES."). Mikki comes back with ZETA (50) to stay in the game, and the players stay within ten points of each other for a few turns until they trade bingoes: Dan's DENOTES on row 14 and Mikki's slightly higher scoring sTEELER on row 15. Dan's post-bingo draw of AINQRUV lets him make QADI (72) through the D in DENOTES; Mikki's AEGILOU was a playable seven. Mikki leads at this point 467-457. Dan holds INORSUV to Mikki's AMV, on a board where you can play a V, or score points, but not both. Dan finds an out-in-two and wins, 490-475, giving Mikki the high loss of the tournament so far. What a game. Mikki is still in first place, but Chinedu Okwelogu's (NGA) 483-345 win over Simon Gillam (Sco) brings him up to 9-2 as well, trailing Mikki by 91 points. Helen Gipson (Sco) beats Raymond Tate (Sco) 407-322 and leads Jojo Delia (MLT) and Dan Sandu (ROM) on 8-3. |
