Raymond Tate (Sco) and Julie Tate (Sco) continued to dominate the field early in this round, with Julie this round climbing to first place as soon as we were sure that Pramit Kamath (IND) was still not at the tournament, costing him another 150-point forfeit and raising Julie to +300. Ray, the low seed in the top prize class, was leading by 76 points against Albert Zammit (MLT) when Albert took ill and had to withdraw from the tournament for the day, adding an extra +50 to the spread and giving Ray a +288 cume. Eventually though, five more players climbed past the +300 mark: local heroine Theresa Brousson (MLT) +449, defending champion Mohammad Sulaiman (ARE) +384, "Sidespin" Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA), U.K. national champion Mikki Nicholson (Eng) and top-ranked female player Helen Gipson (Sco) +331. In this round's annotated game, Mikki opens with a surprising phoney against Joe Caruana (MLT). At the end of the round, Pramit arrived, but with the withdrawal of Albert, Julie stays on duty with Carole and Laurence annotating Board 1. Charmaine, the hotel IT person, has kindly given us an industrial router and three Ethernet lines, so we've got solid connections here at data entry and at Board 1. |
