This is the last round of the day, and the sixth of 32 rounds in the tournament. In this round's annotated game, Mikki Nicholson (Eng) plays Helen Gipson (Sco) in an exciting high-scoring game with two bingoes apiece. Cecil Muscat (MLT) beat Theresa Brousson (MLT) 420-372 to remain undefeated. One game back are Mikki Nicholson (Eng) (still with high spread, +615), Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA), Helen Gipson (Sco) and David Delicata (MLT). The giant-killer of the day is Reno Zammit (MLT), who defeated players whose WESPA ratings are 501, 546 and 965 points higher than his. The toughest luck of the day was probably that of Nicky Huitson (Eng), who needed to score just 43 more points today to have won three more games and finished 23 places higher. We had two 600-point games, Carmel Dodd (AUS) 645-215 against Eileen Meghen (IRL) in Round 4 and Theresa Brousson (MLT) 605-356 against Ovidiu Tamas (ROM) in Round 2. Ovidiu Romulus Tamas is Adrian Ovidiu Tamas' dad, by the way, and he approached me quite concerned before the tournament began to point out that I had confused their names and given him opponents better suited to his much higher-rated son. We miss Adrian, but it's nice to meet his dad. High loss of the day was Joe Caruana's (MLT) 474-518 to Nicky Vella-Laurenti (MLT). That game also had the highest combined total, just short of 1000. In team standings, the lone Nigerian Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA) clearly has the best average, followed by the lone Indian Pramit Kamath (IND), whose 3-3 -235 record is an impressive comeback from a 0-2 -300 double-forfeit opening. Team Scotland is 63% against non-Scots, and the Australian, the Romanian and the Maltese are all in positive territory. Just as I got all caught up with the backlog of work here, and we were all hitting our stride, Amy sends the players off for the night. Games resume at 9 A.M. tomorrow, for the first of nine games that day. Thank you for following along. |
