Play resumed at 09:00 MET this Mother's Day morning here at the Suncrest Hotel in Qawra, Malta. I felt refreshed when I awoke, and the view across to the fortified rocky opposite shore of the bay, with the sunrise sparkling across the waves, more than made up for the booming dance music from the club across the street that serenaded hotel guests to sleep. I made it to the Poseidon Room to set up the electronic scoreboards and good time, then made it to the dining room buffet to get a takeaway breakfast of eggs, sausage and rolls to eat while waiting for first-round results. There's apparently a second dining room that serves something advertised as a "healthy breakfast"; I am unwilling to consider the implications concerning my own choice.

We begin the day with Chinedu Okwelogu (NGA) in first place, playing this round's annotated game against fourth-place Raymond Tate (Sco). Theresa Brousson (MLT) plays Mohammad Sulaiman (ARE) at Board 2, Mikki Nicholson (Eng) plays Simon Gillam (Sco) at Board 3, and Helen Gipson (Sco) plays Pramit Kamath (IND) at Board 4. Chinedu has a one-game lead on Theresa and Mikki, and is two games ahead of Helen.

Chinedu opens with a bingo from ?ELLNOR; Ray draws the other blank later to bingo with ?AILOST and then again with ADEORST in what comes down to a one-point game.

Theresa beats Mohammad 503-416, Mikki beats Simon 499-361, and Helen beats Pramit 484-393 (including a lovely extension of WO with EEILNRV). With Chinedu's one-point win, these four have now moved one game further ahead of the 10-6s: Ray, Cecil Muscat (MLT), Pramit and Dan Sandu (ROM).
