We got Nicky Vella-Laurenti (MLT) to redo the schedule last night: the initial version had games starting every 55 minutes, which was just a little too fast for both players and staff alike. With the new hourly starts, Amy was able to start this round thirty seconds early. In the annotated game at Board 1, it's Mikki Nicholson (Eng) vs. Theresa Brousson (MLT). Mikki opens with READMIT naturally, Theresa replies with LAUGHTER through the E (the front hook never gets played), drawing DNOSUW? for another bingo on her second turn. Then Mikki comes back with back-to-back bingoes on her third and fourth turns: PALTRIER and NEGATORS, followed right away by DOJO (44) and ZINKY (75) to lead by more than 100 points. Theresa's later EXILES (63) wasn't enough to catch up in the end. She drops to third place, leading the 7-3s at +875; her average after two low-scoring games today down to 455, just one point ahead of Helen Gipson (Sco). In first place now after her win against Theresa is Mikki, 8-2 +797. Evan Cohen (ISR) beat Nicky Vella-Laurenti (MLT) 419-300 to surpass Theresa and is now 8-2 +352. Following Theresa on 7-3 are Jojo Delia (MLT), Yi En Gan (DEU) and Cecil Muscat (MLT). Third-seed Chinedu Nosike Okwelogu (NGA) is having a rough start so far: after losing his first two games, he has climbed up to 5-5 -49, but there are still 14 rounds to go. Losing this round in the greatest upset so far to Teresa Lyes (Eng), rated 616 points below him, didn't help. Mario Camilleri (MLT) doubles his winning streak with a six-bingo game against Ovidiu Tamas (ROM), winning 539-417. See photo. At the top board in Division B, it's Jim Wilkie (Sco) vs. Sammy Mangion (MLT), only the second time in either division that the top board has not had a woman playing. (The last time was Round 3 in Division B.) They're not actually the top players though, as their table assignment is based on the leader Margaret Armstrong (Eng) going to Geoff Cooper's (Eng) reserved board. Lee Ann Tan (IRL) scores her second win, 292-279 vs. Marion Loewenstein (ISR). It's the lowest-scoring game and win so far. Margaret beats Geoff to maintain her one-game lead 9-1 +752. Jim beats Sammy and avoids falling further behind. At 7-3 are Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL), Sammy, Maureen Hoch (ISR), Geoff and Albert Zammit (MLT). |
