In the annotated game at Board 1, it's Evan Cohen (ISR) vs. Carmel Dodd (AUS). Their game finishes quickly, within thirty minutes, and Carmel is so excited with her 451-395 win that they (1) put away the tiles before I can take a picture of the board, and (2) give me a result slip that is missing all of Evan's information. I hope the annotators caught it all! Carmel's win puts her at 13-5 +150, now 1½ games behind Evan's 14½-3½ +790. Then come John Barker (AUS)'s 499-414 win over David Delicata (MLT), and the trickle starts to turn into the usual end-of-round flood. Yi En Gan (DEU) beats Mikki Nicholson (Eng) at Board 2, 413-373, climbing to second place ahead of Carmel and knocking Mikki down to fourth place. Helen Gipson (Sco) beats Theresa Brousson (MLT) 429-391 and is in fifth place, 12-6, the lowest-rated player with any significant chance of catching up to Evan. According to the Board 1 annotators (we've got all four today: Julie, Laurence, Natalie and Carole), Evan bingoed three times, once using a blank, but had to trade in four Is after one bingo to get the next, while Carmel bingoed twice, catching Evan with 15 points on his rack with the second one. First in from Division B is Jim Lyes (Eng), who beats Geoff Cooper (Eng) 440-278 to advance to 12-6, currently behind Margaret Armstrong (Eng) 16-1 and Jim Wilkie (Sco) 12-5. Mario Seychell (MLT) continues to score well, leading the field with a total of 7,074, but not win often enough: he's 9-9 +488. In Division B, Margaret Armstrong (Eng), Jim Wilkie (Sco) and Brid Ni Bhriain (IRL) all win their games and keep their places in the top three, beating Albert Zammit (MLT), Pawlu Frendo (MLT) and Paul Mifsud (MLT). Margaret at 17-1 has a four-game lead over Jim Wilkie and a five-game lead over Brid and Jim Lyes, and could be Gibsonized as early as three rounds from now. In one of the biggest upsets so far, Linda Marguy (ISR) beat Joe Caruana (MLT) 351-345, overcoming a 456-point rating difference. Lee Ann Tan (IRL) wins a fourth game, 430-353 againt Alfred Xuereb (MLT), her highest score of the tournament so far. |
